About This Walk

Experience the best of Hadrian's Wall in just one exhilarating week on this 7 Day 6 Night adventure. Trek either east to west or west to east across 84 miles of stunning landscapes.

Experience the complete Hadrian's Wall Path on this classic 7-day itinerary, allowing you to walk coast to coast at a comfortable pace. This is our most popular option, providing the perfect balance between walking distance and time to appreciate the historical sites along the way.

Your journey can begin from either end—the urban setting of Wallsend in Newcastle or the tranquil coastal village of Bowness-on-Solway. Either direction offers its own unique character and both ensure you experience the full diversity of landscapes and history that this UNESCO World Heritage Site has to offer.

From the bustling city of Newcastle, you'll follow the Wall through urban landscapes that gradually give way to rolling countryside. The middle sections take you through Northumberland National Park, where the Wall rides along dramatic ridgelines with panoramic views across both England and Scotland.

Throughout your walk, you'll visit major Roman forts including Segedunum, Chesters, Housesteads, Vindolanda, and Birdoswald. Each fort tells its own story of Roman life on this remote frontier, from cavalry units to infantry garrisons, from military discipline to everyday domestic life.

Terrain & Difficulty

Grade: Moderate

Seven days is the sweet spot for most walkers tackling the full 84-mile route. You'll complete the entire coast-to-coast journey across six walking days, with the extra day (compared to our 6-day option) providing either a gentler pace or an arrival/departure buffer.

The daily distances average around 12-14 miles—long enough to feel like proper walking days, short enough that you're not racing against the clock. This balance makes a real difference to how you experience the Wall, particularly on the challenging central section where you arrive at viewpoints with energy to appreciate them.

The terrain mirrors our 6-day itinerary: urban paths and riverside trails in the east, rolling farmland leading to the dramatic Whin Sill crags in the centre, then pastoral valleys and flat marshland in the west. The difference is pace, not route.

This itinerary suits walkers who want the complete achievement of coast-to-coast without the intensity of our 6-day schedule. You'll have more time at the major forts, more opportunity for photographs, and you'll finish each day ready for dinner rather than collapsed in exhaustion.

Why Choose 7 Days Over 6?

Both cover the full 84 miles coast-to-coast across 6 walking days. The 7-day includes an additional night that allows for either a more relaxed arrival, a gentler final day, or flexibility in how the daily distances are distributed. Most walkers find the 7-day noticeably more comfortable.
Averaging 12-14 miles per walking day, with the exact breakdown depending on accommodation availability and your chosen direction. The longest days are typically in the middle section where accommodation options are more limited.
Yes—it's our most recommended option for people new to multi-day walking. The pace is achievable without being too easy, and you'll finish feeling accomplished rather than broken. The extra time compared to 6 days provides useful margin for unexpected delays or slower sections.
Yes. The 7-day pace allows proper exploration of Housesteads and Birdoswald (both directly on the trail), plus time for a detour to Vindolanda if you start early on the relevant day. You won't feel like you're rushing past the history.
Absolutely. Once Brewed or Haltwhistle make excellent rest day locations—central to the best sites with good facilities. Adding a rest day creates an 8-day trip and allows thorough exploration of Vindolanda, Housesteads, and the Roman Army Museum.
Carefully selected B&Bs and guesthouses, prioritising locations close to the trail with ensuite facilities and proper cooked breakfasts. In the central section where options are limited, we use our local relationships to secure the best available rooms.
As early as possible, especially for peak season (May-September). The central section has limited accommodation, and popular dates fill months in advance. Booking 3-6 months ahead is recommended.
