About This Walk

Discover Hadrian's Wall on our popular 6 day 5 night trip on this East to West trail, traversing the entire UNESCO World Heritage Site from coast to coast.

This self-guided walking holiday traverses the UNESCO World Heritage Site along England's northern frontier, progressing from east to west across dramatic landscapes. The journey encompasses approximately 84 miles of moderate-difficulty terrain over six days with five nights of accommodation.

Beginning at the Wall's eastern terminus at Wallsend, you'll explore the Segedunum Roman Fort Museum before following scenic routes with panoramic River Tyne views. The route takes you through traditional farming communities and peaceful rural landscapes that characterise much of northern England.

The middle sections take you through Northumberland National Park, where the Wall rides along dramatic ridgelines with panoramic views across both England and Scotland. You'll visit major Roman forts including Chesters, Housesteads, and Birdoswald, each telling its own story of Roman life on this remote frontier.

The western sections transition from upland terrain to the peaceful Solway coast, a very different but equally beautiful landscape that marks the frontier's end at the Irish Sea.

Terrain & Difficulty

Grade: Moderate

The 6-day itinerary is our most popular option for completing the full 84-mile coast-to-coast route. With six consecutive walking days averaging 14 miles each, it delivers the complete Hadrian's Wall experience at a pace that's challenging but achievable for reasonably fit walkers.

You'll start at Wallsend where the Wall met the River Tyne and finish at Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast—or vice versa. The terrain changes dramatically across the week: urban riverside paths give way to rolling farmland, then the dramatic central crags, before descending through pastoral valleys to the Solway marshes.

The toughest section comes mid-route. Days three and four cross the Whin Sill escarpment where the Wall clings to rocky ridges with steep climbs and descents. These days require good fitness and proper boots. The eastern and western sections are gentler, providing recovery before and reward after the central challenge.

At this pace, you'll finish each day pleasantly tired with time to enjoy your accommodation and a good dinner. There's opportunity for brief stops at the major Roman sites, though extensive exploration requires adding extra days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Moderate. You'll cover 84 miles in 6 walking days, averaging about 14 miles daily. The central section (days 3-4) is genuinely challenging with rocky terrain and significant elevation changes. The eastern and western sections are easier. You should be comfortable walking 12-16 miles on consecutive days.
Yes, if you have reasonable fitness. Many first-timers successfully complete this itinerary. We recommend some training walks of 10-12 miles beforehand to ensure you're comfortable with the distances. If you're uncertain, the 7-day option gives more breathing room.
Usually day 3, crossing the Whin Sill from Chollerford towards Once Brewed. The combination of distance, rocky terrain, and steep sections makes this the most demanding day. Allow extra time—the terrain slows you down compared to flat miles.
Yes, for sites directly on the trail like Housesteads and Birdoswald. Brief stops of 30-60 minutes work well within the daily schedule. For Vindolanda (which requires a detour) or the Roman Army Museum, you'd need to either sacrifice time elsewhere or consider adding a rest day.
Proper walking boots with ankle support are essential, especially for the rocky central sections. Well-broken-in boots prevent blisters. Trail shoes may suffice for the flatter eastern and western days, but boots are strongly recommended throughout.
Yes. Some walkers prefer to skip the urban section at the start and begin at Heddon-on-the-Wall instead. We can adjust the itinerary to suit your preferences—just let us know when enquiring.
Contact us during the walk—we can sometimes arrange transport or adjust remaining accommodation. However, changes mid-trip are difficult in peak season. If you're uncertain about the pace, book the 7-day option from the start.
