About This Walk

Our most comprehensive itinerary offers the ultimate Hadrian's Wall experience. Over 10 days, you'll walk the complete 84-mile trail at a relaxed pace, allowing you to fully appreciate every aspect of this remarkable Roman frontier.

This in-depth adventure is perfect for those who want to take their time, explore every fort and museum, and truly understand the scale of Roman ambition on Britain's northern frontier.

Arrive and settle into Newcastle upon Tyne. Consider visiting the Great North Museum or exploring the city's excellent dining scene. Your walking begins gently from Segedunum Roman Fort, following the River Tyne before continuing through Newcastle's western suburbs into open countryside.

Walk through peaceful Northumbrian farmland to the beautiful North Tyne valley. Visit Chesters Roman Fort before entering Northumberland National Park, where the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as you climb onto the Whin Sill ridge.

The central section showcases the Wall at its most spectacular—Steel Rigg, Sycamore Gap, and Walltown Crags. You'll have time to properly explore Housesteads Roman Fort and Vindolanda without rushing. Pass Birdoswald Roman Fort before reaching the charming market town of Brampton.

Enter the historic city of Carlisle, with its castle, cathedral, and excellent museums. Your final walking day crosses the peaceful Solway marshes to the western terminus at Bowness-on-Solway.

Terrain & Difficulty

Grade: Moderate

Our most comprehensive itinerary offers Hadrian's Wall as it truly deserves to be experienced. Ten days breaks the complete 84-mile trail into manageable stages, with daily walking distances varying from around 6 to 16 miles depending on overnight accommodation.

At this gentle pace, you're walking for pleasure rather than covering ground. The challenging central section, which can feel relentless on shorter itineraries, becomes a series of manageable, enjoyable days.

The itinerary includes stops in Corbridge (with its Roman town remains and excellent independent shops) and Brampton (the historic market town), adding cultural depth beyond the Wall itself. You'll have genuine time at every major Roman site without watching the clock.

The terrain remains the same as shorter itineraries—you can't flatten the crags by walking slower—but your experience of it changes fundamentally. Viewpoints become places to linger. Pubs become destinations for proper lunches rather than hurried snacks.
